FSL Bursary Program

For the period of 2025-2026, the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs at 間眅埶AV (間眅埶AV) will once again be a sub-beneficiary of the administered by the . The ACUFC has been entrusted by the contributor, the Department of Canadian Heritage, with the implementation of this FSL Bursary Program designed to encourage students whose first official language spoken is English to pursue their post-secondary studies in French, to provide them with related support, to use and improve their language skills and to increase their knowledge of Francophone culture.

FSL Bursary Program Overview

  • This bursary program is intended for Canadians or permanent residents whose first official language spoken is English and who are studying full-time in a program taught in French.
  • Students whose first language is French or who have completed secondary school studies at a Francophone school are not eligible.
  • Students may only receive this bursary once over the course of the entirety of their post-secondary studies.

Bursary Amount

  • 50 bursaries, valued at $3,000 each
  • The bursary is a one-time amount per student
  • This bursary may be combined with other sources of financial aid
  • The bursary is a taxable benefit (T4A forms are available for download in go間眅埶AV)

Eligibility Criteria

Only one bursary may be awarded to each person for the entirety of their studies. However, the application can be submitted in any year of the academic program, whether at the undergraduate or graduate level.

General Criteria

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent residency of Canada
  • Have English as the first official language spoken
  • Have completed their secondary (high) school studies in an English* institution or in non-official language institution (neither French nor English), and have graduated from said institution
  • Be studying in a program delivered in French at 間眅埶AV

*French immersion schools are considered English-language institutions.

Undergraduate Programs or certificates

  • Be enrolled (intended or declared) in an undergraduate program taught in French (Department of French or French Cohort Program)
  • Study full-time for the academic year (Fall and Spring terms), by taking a minimum of 9 units per term
  • Take at least 50% of courses and related activities in French over the two terms combined
  • Cannot submit an application during a year of participation in a formal exchange program

Graduate Programs

  • Be enrolled in a masters or doctoral program offered in French
  •  Study full-time during the academic year (Fall and Spring terms)
  • Take at least 50% of courses and related activities in French over the two terms combined

Teacher Education Program

  • Be enrolled in the PDP or PLP French module during the academic year (Fall and Spring terms)
  • Be enrolled in at least 50% of courses in French (2 out of 4 courses) during the summer term (EDUC 404); priority is given to students who are enrolled in the  the French Educatio Minor

Related Activities in French

We highly recommend that you also get involved in 間眅埶AVs student life in French. Take advantage of the many opportunities to experience French outside the classroom. By adding additional related activities in French to your academic pathway, like volunteer activities with clubs, committees or organizations at 間眅埶AV or within the Francophone community, you could improve your language skills and increase your knowledge of Francophone cultures. To Apply

  • You must currently be enrolled at 間眅埶AV (the bursary is not available to individuals during the admission process).
  • Complete the online application form via SurveyMonkey using your 間眅埶AV profile, during the designated application period.
  • No documents or letters of recommendation are required for this application.
  • Application period for the 2025-2026 academic year:
    September 22 (9:00 am PST) to October 31, 2025 (11:59 pm PST)

The application period for 2025-2026 will open on September 22, 2025.

Process of Distribution

Priority

Special consideration will be given to students who:

  • are entering their final year of studies in a program offered in French at 間眅埶AV
  • are experiencing financial difficulties, confirmed by a student loan application
  • are the first in their family to pursue post-secondary education (self-declared)
  • Belong to an underrepresented or disadvantaged minority group (self-declared)
    Examples: Indigenous students, students with disabilities, visible minorities, individuals from low-income backgrounds, LGBTQ2+ individuals, or those who have lived in foster care or youth protection services

Steps and Timeline

  • Bursaries will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, taking into account both eligibility and priority criteria, and will continue until all available funds have been distributed. 
  • Funds are limited meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee the awarding of a bursary.
  1. Initial Evaluation
    Applications will be reviewed in November based on the eligibility criteria, including enrollment in French programs and courses.
  2. Conditional Confirmation
    Applicants will receive a conditional confirmation if their application is selected, pending compliance with eligibility criteria for the Spring term and availability of funds. This does not yet guarantee the awarding of a bursary. 
  3. Final Verification
    A second review of program and course enrollment will take place at the end of March to confirm final eligibility. This step will also be used to finalize bursary distribution based on the number of available bursaries and eligible students.
  4. Final Confirmation
    In early April, official notification will be sent to all applicants, whether or not they have been selected for a bursary.

Important Note: Study terms must be completed. If a student withdraws from the program during the terms in question, their application will be cancelled, and 間眅埶AV reserves the right to request repayment of the awarded bursary. 

Payment

  • Applicants will receive an email confirming whether or not they have been awarded a bursary.
  • The funds will be deposited directly into the students 間眅埶AV account.
  • Anticipated payment: early April 2025
