Legacy Gift Celebrates École Gabrielle-Roy and French-Language Education and Book Reading in B.C.
Students at in Surrey lit up with excitement on June 3 as representatives from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Faculty of Education and the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA) . The $1,000 donation made it possible for new French-language books selected based on student suggestions to be purchased.
The books, curated by school library clerk Kelsey-Dawn Watanabe, cover a wide range of topics from self-esteem and emotional well-being to history and math, many in comic-book format to better engage students.
The event brought together representatives from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, including Gino LeBlanc, director of OFFA, Dr. Isabelle Côté, assistant director of OFFA and Faculty of Education instructor, and Kavita Hoonjan, teacher training coordinator, alongside school principal Vincent Tourvieille.
The moment was more than symbolic. It marked the continuation of an initiative launched in 2024 to recognize and support schools that advance French-language education in B.C. while also celebrating OFFA's 20th anniversary.
"When one can see firsthand the joy and excitement in the eyes and the faces of the children and youth who will enjoy the books purchased through the funds provided by the Legacy Gift, one realizes the positive impact that is possible," shared Hoonjan.

The gift reinforces a strong and growing partnership between ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and the (CSF), with Gabrielle-Roy serving not only as a K–12 hub for French-language education but also as an essential school partner in ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Professional Development Program (PDP). Several PDP alumni are now staff at the school, including Tourvieille, who expressed his pride in receiving the gift.
"This gift highlights the strong partnership between ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and the Francophone School District as we work together for the future of French-language education in British Columbia," said Tourvieille. "This field faces unique challenges in a minority environment."
As part of the celebration, LeBlanc spoke to the deeper meaning behind the initiative: "Through this gift, we are making a real connection between ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, our Faculty and French education in our community. With this legacy gift, we are fulfilling our mission and supporting the vitality of the francophone community with very concrete support to students and francophone schools."
With new books now in the hands of students, the Legacy Gift stands as a small but meaningful investment in the next generation of French-language learners and leaders in British Columbia.
