Abstract:
Terrorism remains a persistent global security challenge, exhibiting complex spatio-temporal patterns across regions. This project explores global terror attacks using the Global Terrorism Database (GTD). It pays particular attention to the attacks in three South Asian countries—Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan. The study begins with a summary of the recorded terror attacks. By applying self-exciting point process models, the Hawkes process and its extensions, we examine the temporal and spatial dependencies of the attacks. The findings of the project provide new insights into terrorism patterns and offer valuable implications for policymakers seeking to mitigate future terror attacks, particularly in South Asia. The project research may contribute to methodological advancements in terrorism research.
